A bird flew out from under a car and into the spokes of my bike while I was riding. I stopped. It laid there, stunned; I thought dead. Three or four other birds flew to the little body - down, up, down, up again - checking it. Dead? Dead? I have to report: I'm not sure. I did my best. I moved it to the side of the road, out of the way. It seemed to wake up and flap, flap, flap and move with me. Nothing broken. Nothing bleeding. It flew away.

I've been reading Philip K. Dick: the future, animals and empathy, voices, God, women and Aliens. It's got me thinking about where we end up eventually, what we do with the time we have, and who we choose to spend that time with until we get to wherever it is we're ending up.
